The Initiative for the Rights of Persons with Mental Disabilities (MDRI-S) was founded as a non-profit non-governmental organization with the support of the international organization Disability Rights International (DRI), which recognized the need for a permanent presence and strengthening of the movement for the rights of persons with disabilities in Serbia. MDRI is fully committed to the protection and promotion of the human rights of persons with intellectual and mental disabilities and the achievement of their full inclusion and participation in society. Special attention is paid to children and adults who are at risk or are already staying in social welfare institutions and psychiatric hospitals, considering that they are the most vulnerable and marginalized group. The organization was founded in August 2008 by persons with disabilities, their family members, experts and human rights activists. The establishment was prompted by the need for the existence of an organization whose primary focus is the protection of the human rights of persons with intellectual and mental disabilities.
